The Student/Counselor Relationship
An important part of the student/counselor relationship is trust, and one of the ways counselors build that trust is through confidentiality. I share with students that I will try to keep our conversations confidential but there are times when I will need to share with other adults the information the student has shared with me. Such a break in confidentiality would include times when the student tells me they are thinking of hurting themself or others, when someone else is hurting them or when they are thinking of doing something that is dangerous. I do share with the students that problem solving is a collaborative effort and there will be many times when we will involve parents and teachers in our conversations. Please call me if you have any questions about confidentiality.
