  • District Procedures Regarding Law Enforcement Activities

We encourage Panther families and the community to read about the district's procedures regarding law enforcement activities in a letter to the community.

The body of the letter can also be found below.  To read message below in another language, the Google Translate feature may be used.

    _________________________

Dear Bloomsburg Area School District Community:

The purpose of this letter is to reaffirm our shared understanding of the district’s policies and procedures regarding law enforcement activities in and around school district buildings and property.  As a district, we understand the heightened concerns within our community, especially regarding the potential impact on our students’ well-being, and remain committed to providing clear communication and support.

The Bloomsburg Area School District Board of Directors has affirmed the district’s commitment to “to prepare its students to become contributing, responsible citizens and life-long learners with the ability to adapt and to succeed in a competitive world.”  We maintain clear procedures for any situation where outside law enforcement officials request access to our students, schools, or student information. We remain dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

On 30 January 2025, our administrative team and office staff received the following guidance and have in place the following procedures for responding to law enforcement officials, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers:

    • Federal officers are no different than local and/or state law enforcement.
    • The district has policies and procedures in place that do NOT allow the release of any private student information.
    • Federal officers would need a valid warrant for any type of request or activity they wish to conduct.
    • This warrant would be reviewed by our School Police Officers (SPOs) and shared with our school district solicitor for validation purposes.
    • Parents and/or guardians would need to be notified as per policy when students are being questioned or having discussions with an outside legal authority (similar to a police officer coming into the school to interview students for something that took place outside of school), as they would need parent permission.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter, which will help us maintain a safe and inclusive environment.

    Sincerely,

    Jonathan J. Cleaver
    Superintendent
