Dear 2019-20 Chorus,

 

Welcome to Chorus!  Bring a love and passion for singing and a drive for choral excellence to our new home, Room 012 for a great experience in choral singing! There are several of you that should easily make County, District, Region and All-State Chorus.  County Chorus will be held at DANVILLE. District Chorus will be hosted by Snyder Union County Schools at a TBA location.  Region Chorus is hosted by Wyoming Seminary and All-State is at the Kalahari Resort in the Poconos, PA.  The audition piece for Fusion, County and District Chorus is The Heavens Are Telling.  I have posted the music at an attachment to the left of your screen.  Looking forward to a great year! 

Chorus Trip is scheduled for Hershey Park Adjudication Festival this year!

Fusion Audition Information

Fusion is a select mixed choral ensemble that performs music from all genres.  An audition is required for the group.  Auditions will begin the First Thursday of school (August 29th) at 7:05am in our NEW choral room.  Part of the audition is punctuality.  AUDITION PACKETS  are available in the choral room.  You are expected to prepare the audition pieces for that first rehearsal.  Part independence is critical to the success of this group! Auditions will every day at 7:05am every day except Wednesday.

County Chorus

County Chorus Audition Piece:  Os Justi - Bruckner 

All of the information that you need is listed in the County/District Tab on the left.  Yes, the audition piece is in Latin this year!  It is quite approachable and the parts and enjoyable to sing!

 

 

 

Audition Date:  Monday, September 30  – County Chorus Auditions at Central Columbia 6:00 p.m.

 

Festival Dates: Tuesday, November 5, 2019 and Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Danville High School.  

Concert: Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 7PM ($5 admission)

 

Audition Requirements:

Any BHS Chorus member in 9^th through 12^th grade may audition.  Prepare Os Justi from beginning to end.  You will sing 30- 45 seconds of this choral piece unaccompanied as a solo.  The audition selection will be given to you the evening of auditions outside of the audition room.  ALL auditions MUST be LIVE and in person.  No taped auditions will be permitted.  You are evaluated in the categories of Pitch Accuracy, Intonation, Rhythm Accuracy, Tone Quality, Musicianship and Diction on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is the best.  The top 10-12 students will be selected to participate in the festival.  Do not audition if you cannot participate in both days of the festival.  Wednesday 8am-4pm  Thursday 12:00pm – 8:30pm. 

 

 

 

District Chorus

District Chorus Audition piece: Os Justi - Bruckner (Yes, it is the same piece as County auditions)

Audition Date:  Sunday, October 20  – District Chorus Auditions at Williamsport.  Time:  10:15am - 9pm Bring money for lunch at Hoss’

 

Festival Dates:  District Chorus Wednesday thru Saturday (1/28 to 2/1) - hosted by Snyder Union County Chorus at a location TBA.  Auditions will be held for Region IV-State Chorus on Wednesday evening.  The Concert will be Friday night at 7pm. (Tickets are cash $6/adults $4/children)

Audition Requirements:

BHS Chorus member must be in 10^th through 12^th grade.  Two women per part are allowed from each school and four men per part allowed to audition from each school.  Students interested in auditioning for District Chorus MUST audition for County Chorus.  The representatives for the women’s parts are chosen through those auditions.  Prepare Achieved from beginning to end.  You will sing 45-60 seconds of this choral piece unaccompanied as a solo.  The audition selection will be given to you the evening of auditions outside of the audition room.  ALL auditions MUST be LIVE and in person.  No taped auditions will be permitted.  You are evaluated in the categories of Pitch Accuracy, Intonation, Rhythm Accuracy, Tone Quality, Musicianship and Diction on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is the best.  The top 10-12 students will be selected to participate in the festival.  Do not audition if you cannot participate in the entire festival.  You cannot leave the festival for ANY REASON.  If a student auditions successfully for the festival but is not prepared for the festival (does not know their music two weeks prior to the festival), I reserve the right to remove them from the festival.

Once you are selected for District Chorus – you will need to prepare 8-10 pieces.  From that folder of new music, you will be required to present a 60-90 second audition rom two contrasting pieces in the folder to audition for Region Chorus.  The same format is used for the students to advance to State Chorus.

 

Audition Dates for  - Saturday, November 17 (must be confirmed) from 8am - 6pm

Musical Auditions are hosted annually one or two weeks prior to Thanksgiving.  For those auditions, the students will need to prepare a 30 second ballad and a one minute monologue of a retelling of a folk tale with props adn costumes.  Students should know the entire show because they may be asked to sing more of the selection in the audition process.

Show dates are March 12 at 7:30pm and March 13 at 1pm and 7:30pm.

In 2014-15 - Dante Green, Jordan Marolf and Lyell Hintz represented BHS at All State Chorus. Dante Green represented BHS at All Eastern Chorus in Rhode Island.

 

In 2013-14, Bloomsburg High School had 26 students attend County Chorus, 16 students attend District Chorus, 8 students attend Region Chorus and three students, Lyell Hintz, Jordan Marolf and Dante Green, attend State Chorus!  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you are interested in developing your independent vocal technique, schedule Voice Class.  If you are interested in understanding more about the structure of music, schedule Music Theory.  Advanced honors levels of study may be pursued upon completion of level one of Voice and Theory. 

 

 

508 - Chorus

Chorus is offered five times a week.  The following areas of music will be explored by students who select this one credit course: 1) Rhythm, melody, form and tone color through the use of choral music; 2) Various periods and styles of choral music; 3) Techniques of singing; 4) Performance of music in required public performances.  Students will also have the opportunity to tryout for County and District Chorus Festivals.

 

Band/Chorus, Band Front/Band Chorus and Band Front/ Chorus are classes that permit students to be actively involved in the entire music program at BHS!  It is possible and encouraged to excel in both areas. 

 

506 Music Theory I

Music Theory gives students the opportunity to express their thoughts through a medium of music.  The art of composition is explored through the use of Sibelius, a computer notation program.  If you have the desire to express yourself through song writing, this class is for you.  Of course, we need to be sure that you have understanding of the fundamental concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony  and form so that your pieces sound good in the end!  This course is a must if you plan to study music beyond the high school level.  You will be able to read music better by the end of the year of study!

 

507 Music Theory IIH

Music Theory IIH is designed for more in-depth study of the elements of the structure of music.  Beware, your appreciation for the structure of good music will be greatly enhanced by taking this course!  Through the use of Sibelius, you will notate scores and easily change the key so any instrument can perform your song.  Through the use of Ear master 4.0, you will be able to better write the melodies that get stuck in your head in the middle of the night.  More rules for the structure of music are explored, followed and then broken!  This course would prepare you well if you desire to have a music career someday.  Because it is an honors course, there is some advanced work to complete prior to taking the course.  The successful completion of the Theory I is required!

 

509 Voice Class

Are you unhappy with the sound of your voice?  Do you want to sing like your favorite pop icon?  Do you eat, sleep, drink and breathe the desire to be a singer?  Do you just want to learn more about singing?  Check out Voice Class I.  You will learn to sing with ease!  There are several ingredients to the success puzzle for aspiring vocalists: diction, a fancy word for pronounces words correctly, efficient use of the body to breathe and shape sounds, phrasing and dynamics.  One of the tools that will help you to learn diction is the secret language of IPA.  You'll have to take the course to learn how to use it effectively.  Seriously, if it your desire to learn to sing better, this is the class for you.

 

510 Voice Class IIH and 511 Voice Class IIIH

If you loved the first level, you will certainly want to delve deeper into vocal study.  This course is designed for the vocal dynamo that wants to study voice in college or pursue singing more actively after high school.  the curriculum is designed to encourage you to dig deeper into singing technique so the voice is more effortless and more expressive.  More practice is required in this level.  Level III students will sing a complete 20 minute recital.  Some  advanced work needs to be accomplished prior to taking this class.  Of course, successful completion of Level I is required.
